Need & Desire
The Centennial Series
Thesis Statement
Post-Industrial Revolution society has been swallowed in an era of discontent and frivolous overconsumption. All the while, completely disregarding their damaging effects on the environment and integrity of the designer. ‘Need & Desire’ is a commentary on that over consumption and disposable design that currently drive the furniture industry.
It addresses product waste and proposes sustainability through empathy, aesthetics and by the ‘Virtue of Less.’ By reflecting on the past philosophies, like those that drove The Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, The Shakers as well as the more contemporary philosophies of Scandinavian Modernists, Need & Desire forms the hypothesis that emphasizing beauty is a viable option for sustainable production.
Utilizing a more sustainable limited production and ‘built to order’ model in harmony with both emotionally durable and aesthetically sustainable furniture pieces will result in less production, less consumption, less environmental impact and more purposeful, meaningful and resilient furniture to endeavor the rebirth of excellence in skilled craft, design morality, longevity and the inevitable creation of value. Value for those who seek beauty, permanence and conscience over trend.
