Anti / Lion
Anti/lion takes its name from its Antlion namesake, a previous piece which strives to be both repeatable, neutral and standardized for the sake of commerce. ‘Anti’ refers to ‘antithesis.’ One standardized frame can produce two distinct objects and representations. In this case Anti/lion is the representation of a slow, meaningful design object. Although the frame of Anti/lion may be one of standardized and repeatable origin, the application of a traditional material, in this case an entirely woven paper cord carcass, and the inherent value of the process required by said material, imbues the differentiated meaning and implied value of time. High contrast swift metallic lines are bound by traditional black paper cord. Anti/lion reads as a traditional wicker outdoor chair, even down to the front legs, where three steel tubes meet. Although the subject may perceive Anti/lion as an outdoor furniture piece, as most wicker pieces are, its actual intent is for interior use, adding another small challenge visual perception.
