Signet

Signet rings, historically carved intaglio with initials or family crests, were used as seals for documents by those considered noble or elite. ‘Signet’ is a low, wide and deep Scandinavian lounge chair. Its squat stature mirrors that of a signet ring. From the rear, its back panel, which is bent plywood, foamed and upholstered in sheepskin, creates the illusion of a gem or bezel. Continuous mitered solid walnut is sculpted to contour the arm from elbow to palm, providing ample area to document the gathering of wear and the development of the subject object relationship. Visual discord can be created by the floating Fin Juhl-esque back panel, secured to a base stretcher and the continuous arm by metal pins. The entire structure is placed upon four reverse tapered posts, thinning at the joints, to produce the illusion of a ring hovering about the surface. Challenging materials and precarious orientations marry in Scandinavian comfort.
